The title may raise eyebrows. It’s meant to. “Punk is supposed to offend you,” Nelson says. “Or at least make you ask, ‘What the hell is going on here?’ Then, if you’re still curious, it shows you something honest underneath.”

Nelson doesn’t hide from the fact that he grew up feeling out of place. “I had a stutter, so I was never able to blend in even if I wanted to. I didn’t have the option of pretending to be someone else,” he says. That radical honesty of being forced to face the world without pretense shaped both his worldview and his writing.
